Accolade Flooring Company - Hardwood Floor Refinishing - Connecticut

Hardwood Floor Refinishing.

Accolade Flooring

Serving Connecticut and Massachusetts Accolade Flooring LLC is a full service hardwood flooring operation. Whether it’s an installation, refinish (sanding), repair, or screen/ coat that’s needed Accolade is the company for you. Below we will explain each of the previously listed projects (which make up the bulk of our work) to better inform you of what type of process may be best for your home or business.

Installation - Accolade will install a beautiful new hardwood floor in your home. Whether it’s a pre-finished or unfinished (finished on site) new floor you want installed, Accolade will work with you on deciding what style/design, color, and type (species) of wood floor you are looking for.

Refinish (Sanding) - Do you have an existing wood floor in your home that looks worn down from years of traffic, or just doesn’t look the way you want it to anymore, or did you just rip up an old carpet and discovered a potentially beautiful hardwood floor underneath. Accolade will refinish that floor to make it look like new. Through a process of sanding Accolade will strip your existing floor down to bare wood, getting rid of all of the existing polyurethane, stain, and scratches that may exist. We will then refinish your floor applying the coating you choose making your floor look like new again.

Repair - Is there an area on your existing wood floor that just doesn’t look the same as the rest? This could be due to some common factors such as water damage, heavy scratching/gouges, or pet damage (ie: marking their territory on your floor), among many other reasons a floor may become damaged. You may be thinking that the only way to fix this is to install an entirely new floor. That is not the case. Through a process we call “lacing”, Accolade can repair the damaged area by cutting out the damaged section and replacing it with the same type of wood as the rest of the floor. After the lacing is complete the floor will then need to be refinished so it will match the entire floor.

Screen/Coat - Do you have an existing floor that you don’t think needs to be completely refinished, but is does have some surface scratches (Not Gouges) and could maybe use a freshening up. Then a screen coat is the way for you to go. A screen coat is a cost effective way to bring some life back to your existing floor. During the screen coat process Accolade will lightly sand out surface scratches while not breaking through to the bare wood and then apply two new coats of polyurethane for added protection. This will make your slightly worn floor look like new again.

John Merrill - Jazz Musician - New York City, NY

John Merrill - Guitarist, Composer

Merrill Music

Born and raised in Middletown, Connecticut, John Merrill tuned into jazz early on. As a boy he enjoyed the sweet notes of Leonard Brown's sax coming from next door. The saxophonist, then associated with Middletown's Wesleyan University, was generous with his advice and encouragement to the young John. John's guitar teacher, bass player Dave Stoltz, shared his jazz recordings with John and taught him to listen to and play the music. In high school John got himself excused from class to go up to Hartford and hear visiting jazz greats lecture in Jackie McLean's music program at the University of Hartford. In his senior year in high school John played with Wesleyan's Jazz Orchestra under the direction of vibraphonist Jay Hoggard.

At Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York, John was fortunate to study with Mark Elf. Mark's distinctive style of guitar playing intrigued and challenged John. When John moved to Greenwich Village to study at the New School he continued with Mark and also studied with such jazz notables as Jim Hall, Arnie Lawrence, Junior Mance, Sam Newsome, and Benny Powell.

During his ten years in New York John has played around Manhattan and the greater New York area at private functions and restaurants in addition to well known jazz venues such as Smalls, Visions, and the Village Gate. John has also played gigs throughout Europe, in the midwestern United States, in California, and all around the Caribbean.

John continues to devote his time to studying, performing, and writing music. While jazz remains his primary focus both Brazilian and classical music are important and influential interests. John maintains a busy schedule with the band Lapis Luna but also performs with other vocalists and instrumentalists including pianists Spike Wilner, Whitney Ashe, and Ehud Asherie, vocalists Sasha Dobson, Ryo Tashima, and Milt Grayson, and drummers Brian Floody and Billy Kaye.

John has played as a sideman on various albums and worked on the sound track of some independent films. Critic Greg Robinson chose the John Merrill Sextet CD Natural Progression as one of his five picks for Jazz Magazines Top 5 Albums of 2000. John is currently at work on a new CD which will be available in early 2004.
